As lower leaves fall off, the cane-like stem becomes noticeable. Flower Description and Time of Bloom: Dieffenbachia has a unique type of flower; a spathe and spadix. The spathe is green and often resembles an unfolding leaf. The spadix is erect, off-white in color, and is often hidden. Cultural Requirements—Preferences: This plant prefers use of a loamy, peaty, and well-drained potting soil. Place in bright indirect light with protection from direct sun. Allow soils to dry between watering. Interesting Information/Problems: No serious insect or disease problems. Wear gloves when working with this plant. The name dumb cane refers to the toxic qualities of this plant. Sap burns the mouth and throat causing numbness and possible paralysis of the vocal cords. Sap can also irritate human skin and eyes.
